Creating Synergy in Forest Research: HUAF-IDS Mutual Capacity Development in Forest Area

A North - South partnership between TBI Viet Nam, Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry (HUAF), and IDS/Utrecht University (IDS/UU) has contributed to the institutional strengthening of HUAF and created a dynamic network of participants in various fields and disciplines. The project objective was enhancement of HUAF capacity for participatory socio-economic research, focusing on methodologies related to livelihood development and integrated natural resource management.

This North-South partnership offers students and staff from both sides the opportunity to conduct field research in Viet Nam in a development-oriented, interdisciplinary, and international context. This cooperation has formed the basis of interesting discussion forums and new educational initiatives on issues related to forests and people.

The cooperation between HUAF and UU has been promoted through support given to 10 UU MSc students conducting field research in Viet Nam. The project created a joint academic environment at HUAF which allows staff members, researchers, and students of the two universities to easily exchange information, knowledge, and lessons-learnt. As a result, HUAF teaching and research capacity is greatly enhanced.

In addition, an unofficial network has been established with a wide range of participants including international senior experts, researchers, lecturers, and students from HUAF. Network members exchange knowledge, give feedback to each other and work closely together on topics of mutual interest. The network is also used to circulate information on scholarship opportunities, short courses and other relevant topics.
